Hong Kong continues to stand out as the preferred partner for overseas companies doing business with Mainland China.

A forest of neon symbolises Hong Kong's brightening economic prosperity

The latest annual business outlook survey conducted by the American Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong (AmCham) among its members revealed that 95% of respondents believed that the outlook for business in Hong Kong in 2001 was "good" or "satisfactory" compared with 84% in 2000. Commenting on the survey, AmCham Chairman Paula DeLisle told Exhibition News, "One reason American companies in Hong Kong are so upbeat about the future is the impending accession of China to the World Trade Organisation. In particular, they recognise Hong Kong's unique capabilities as facilitator for multinationals establishing a China presence."

Simpler customs cargo clearance procedures
On 1 Jan 2001, Shenzhen Customs announced the simplification of cargo transit and clearance procedures at Hong Kong's border with the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone to the north. Among the improvements now in effect is pre-declaration of imports to the Mainland 60 minutes before entry to one of the three border checkpoints. Declaration details are processed electronically and trucks use specially designated gateways.

In another recent survey, conducted by the Hong Kong Government's Census and Statistics Department, voluntary responses showed that more than 500 corporate newcomers set up regional operations in Hong Kong in the year to 1 June 2000, bringing the total to more than 3,000 - a 20% surge from the 1999 figures.

Multinationals appreciate Hong Kong's role as regional base for their Asia Pacific business
